Sometimes it takes a different approach to set their thinking free.
English Tuition for GCSE and A-Level
Teenagers are capable of far more than they realise.
One-to-one tuition gives them the space to discover that.
Away from the demands of a busy classroom, together we work out how they think and how they learn; we spotlight strengths they may not know they have, and discover what’s needed to move upwards in English.
Whether they’re struggling with confidence, stuck at a particular grade, or aiming higher, I find what makes things click and turn that into progress they can trust.
-
A strong English Language grade opens doors — to sixth form, university and beyond.
Build confidence, master the skills, and develop the exam know-how to boost that grade. We work on the specific demands of the exam: understanding what a question is really asking, analysing a writer’s choices, comparing texts and crafting effective creative and transactional writing. We sharpen analysis, strengthen writing and develop strategies for planning, timing and tackling each question.
I also show students how examiners read their work, where marks are won and lost, and how to turn what they know into answers that hit higher bands. -
Knowing the text is only the beginning.
Learn how to tackle exam questions, develop confident interpretations and explore writers’ ideas, craft and wider context — then turn it all into responses that hit those higher grades.
We dig beneath plot and character to explore how and why writers create meaning, making connections between language, structure, themes and context. Students learn to develop their own interpretations, select evidence intelligently and build an argument rather than simply collecting quotations or reproducing what they’ve been taught.
I help them understand what separates a competent response from a perceptive one — and how to turn good ideas into focused, analytical essays with real depth and clarity.
-
Turn good ideas into stronger results.
Explore literature through different contextual lenses, consider alternative interpretations and develop confident readings of their own. Then learn how to shape it all into sophisticated, well-structured arguments that tick every Assessment Objective — and secure the grades for whatever comes next.
At A-Level, we go deeper: questioning texts, exploring critical perspectives and making connections between writers, periods and contexts. Students learn to weigh up different interpretations rather than simply accepting them, and to develop an argument that is genuinely their own.
We also work closely on the craft of the essay — selecting and embedding evidence, developing analysis and making every paragraph contribute to the argument. I help students understand exactly what the Assessment Objectives require, without allowing them to dictate or constrain their thinking.
It all starts with the student …
Bud
The journey begins by finding out exactly what makes them grow.
I take time to discover how they think and learn, what’s already working, where they’re getting stuck, and what’s needed to open up their understanding.
Unfurl
With stronger roots beneath them, things start to unfurl.
I tailor my approach completely to them and their needs. We fill the gaps and develop methodical strategies for understanding questions, tackling texts, and writing responses that shine.
Grow
They begin to surprise themselves.
As their ideas strengthen, so does their independence. No challenge, no change: I encourage them to think more deeply, write more analytically, and trust their judgement — raising their confidence and expectations.
Fly
Confidence comes into its own.
They trust their ideas, tackle texts with greater independence, and know exactly how to get what’s in their head onto the page in a way examiners reward. They enjoy their progress and want to show it off.
